What the Body Carries: A Members Salon program
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: Join us in the Science Studios for an intimate evening of art and conversation revolving around our current exhibition, Jordan Eagles’ Bases Loaded. The show brings together Eagles' striking visual practice and a sport long mythologized as “America’s pastime,” baseball, to examine ideas of team, identity, and belonging in contemporary American culture.
The evening begins at 6:30 pm with a reception—wine and light bites will be available throughout. At 7:30 pm, curator Gabriel Florenz will lead a brief walkthrough of the exhibition alongside artist Jordan Eagles, who will be present to answer questions and discuss the materials and ideas behind his work.
The centerpiece of the evening begins at 8 pm, when virologist Dr. Talia Mota sits down with Army veteran and HIV advocate Ken Pinkela to discuss the body, disease, and the cultural forces that shape both. The talk will run approximately 45 minutes.
This event is open to Pioneer Works members at all levels. Become a member today to support the interdisciplinary work of our residents and other community members.

Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: Pioneer Works is proud to present the long-awaited return of instrumental rock trio the Dirty Three for a rare live performance at Pioneer Works and their first in New York City since 2009.
In June 2024, the band released Love Changes Everything, breaking a 12-year wait for new music from the Australian instrumental rock band. Now, the band reunites and sets sail across the ocean for their first North American tour since 2012. To the Main Hall they bring impassioned live performances that stir up a volcanic force each time: plunging into an explosive free fall in one moment, then morphing into a divine pool of emotions in an effortless flow. Like witnessing any supernatural phenomenon, it's an overwhelming experience that stays with you.

AI Literacy Masterclass №1 – When Computational Thinking Slows You Down
Venue: Index
Date: -
Description: In a new class with Nitzan Hermon, we’ll explore how AI can function as a thinking aid rather than just a productivity tool. Instead of optimizing for faster outputs, the session focuses on using computational thinking to clarify intention, surface hidden assumptions, and hold better questions open for longer.
Designed for anyone already using AI in work or creative practice — no technical background required — this 90-minute session introduces practical frameworks, prompts, and patterns for engaging with AI more intentionally.
Come for this first session, and, if your interest is piqued, take $100 off the full 3-month course.

Description: A contemporary of the Nouvelle Vague who marched always to the beat of his own drummer, Louis Malle was a filmmaker impossible to pin down—in the words of director Duguet: “A man in constant motion, a curious, unsettling filmmaker whose choices were sometimes controversial, who knew how to navigate between fiction and documentary, between France and the United States, between the intimate and the political.” In Louis Malle, le Révolté, Duguet looks at this most multifaceted of filmmakers from every vantage, offering invaluable and intimate insight into the work of an artist who most verily contained multitudes.
“It was such a thrill to watch Claire’s documentary about my father last summer. I watched it at home in New York with my mother, the day after it premiered at Venice, and it made me so proud, both of his legacy and to be part of it, but also of Claire and the beautiful film she made. I loved learning more about the ways in which his films connected with contemporary social and cultural issues, as well as being reminded of what an insatiably curious, kinetic person he was.” —Chloé Malle
“For me, Claire’s film about my father is a magnificent portrait in that it shows not only that he was a great artist but a man well worth knowing, and I’m very glad American movielovers, whether they know his films or not, are going to discover that important aspect of him.” —Justine Malle
Q&A with director Claire Duguet moderated by US Vogue editor Chloé Malle on Friday, June 5th

Description: One of the most beloved directorial debuts of the 1990s and a popular sensation in Japan and beyond, Iwai’s epistolary drama—first released in the US as When I Close My Eyes and playing here in a new 4K restoration—stars Miho Nakayama, in a dual role, as both widowed fiancée Hiroko and librarian Itsuki, a former classmate of Hiroko’s deceased lover, together keeping alive the memory of the departed in a correspondence, begun by accident, that brings many a faded memory into focus. A work of gentle melodiousness and forceful feeling, of unexpected digressions and beautifully modulated tonal shifts, and, thanks to cinematographer Noboru Shinoda’s exquisite eye for the snowy landscape of Hokkaido, of formidable pictorial beauty.
Distributor: Film Movement
The picture was scanned in 4K from the original camera negative, with color grading supervised by the director. For the sound, while based on a digital 5.1-channel mix, the center channel retains the original film audio in accordance with the director’s preference.

Going In at Pioneer Works
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date: -
Description: Going In at Pioneer Works is among the first projects supported by the NYC Office of Nightlife’s Nightlife Grant, a new initiative aimed at strengthening and sustaining New York City’s nightlife ecosystem.
The event is a 12-hour immersive listening program exploring long-form compositions for deeply expanded states and attentive listening. The program brings together artists working with slow, non-directive sound and durational forms that support sustained presence, collective atmosphere, and immersive listening.
Going In is a sub-label of The Bunker New York focused on long-form compositions and listening-centered environments. Rather than a traditional concert format, the event unfolds as a continuous environment, allowing audiences to move freely through the space and engage at their own pace over the course of the day.
Seating will include chairs as well as open floor space, with a limited number of early entry tickets available for those who wish to arrive ahead of general admission to settle into floor areas and get VIP balcony access. While space will be available to sit or lie down, floor access is not guaranteed and will be determined by arrival time and capacity.
The 2026 program features live sets from Abby Echiverri, Ami Dang, Chloe Alexandra Thompson, Christina Wheeler, Gamelatron, Imaginary Softwoods, Infinity Machine (Juan MacLean x Gee Dee), Kelly Moran, Kroba, Omar Ahmad x DJ Haram, Phil Yeah, and The Transcendence Orchestra (Anthony Child, Dan Bean, C. Lavender), with interludes throughout the day curated by Matt Xavier.
The event will also include a collaborative altar installation by Samantha de Maryela, honoring Red Hook artists affected by the 2025 fire at 481 Van Brunt St. The installation creates space for reflection, gathering, and healing within the broader community.
This event is designed to support a shared environment of attentive listening and presence. We ask that phone use be kept to a minimum and that conversation be reserved for outdoor areas, helping maintain a quiet, immersive space inside the hall. Guests are welcome to step into the yard at any time for conversation or connection.
Please note: This is a twelve-hour durational program. Early Access ticket holders may enter at 11:00 AM. General Admission begins at 12 PM. Guests may arrive and depart throughout the day. Re-entry is permitted with a valid wristband.
This event is standing and seated. Seating includes chairs and open floor space. Floor space is limited and not guaranteed; availability is determined by arrival time and venue capacity. Please plan accordingly for comfort over an extended period of time.
Going in is presented by Beyond Booking and Pioneer Works and supported by the NYC Office of Nightlife. The full program will be broadcast live by The Lot Radio, with live visual manipulations by ACE accompanying the stream.

Description: Incredibly prescient in its understanding of how a still-young internet would fundamentally alter youth culture, Shunji’s film introduces Yuichi (Hayato Ichihara) in an ice field, the landscape gradually obscured by accreting chat room messages. Alienated from classmates and his old friend Shusuke (Shugo Oshinari), Yuichi retreats into his relationship with the songs of goth-inflected pop act Lily Chou-Chou—created for the film, with vocals by Salyu, though the three-piece reformed for the movie’s 10th anniversary—whose music can do nothing to stop the bloody, hormone-fueled reckoning ahead. A clangorous collision of tradition and ultramodernity, innovative in its understanding of digital cinematography as a new medium with new rules. Distributor: Film Movement. Q&A with director Shunji Iwai on Saturday, June 6th.

Venue: Metrograph

Description: In collaboration with Brooklyn-based Jollof Films, co-founded by Senegalese artists Assane Sy and Ahmad Cissé, and their pan-African cinema club, we present a screening of Cissé’s debut feature—the first ever Malian feature made in Bambara, the filmmaker’s native language. The film is a potent drama depicting the rape of a young mute girl and, when she discovers herself pregnant following the assault, the ostracism she faces at the hands of her religiously conservative community and upwardly mobile family. A brazen challenge to the patriarchal power structure, Den Muso was censored on release and its director briefly imprisoned on specious charges—he wrote the script for his next film, 1978’s Baara, while under lock-and-key—but these attempts at suppression did little to muffle the impact of his angry, impassioned film.

Description: Newly arrived in Tokyo for university from the chilly Hokkaido countryside, shy Uzuki (pop singer Takako Matsu, in her first leading role) is faced with settling into a foreign environment, forming friendships, and negotiating everything that comes with a first crush. “Handcrafted to the extent that Iwai designed the tickets and carted 35mm prints to theaters. On the surface, an hour-long movie about a young woman moving to a new town to start university is pretty thin. On the other hand, if it’s so thin, why do you finish the film feeling like someone’s injected helium into your soul? Sometimes happy is harder than sad, and April Story manages to capture the unconquerable optimism of youth on celluloid, ready and waiting to be tasted any time you need it.” —Film Comment

Roundtable on AI Melancholy
Venue: Woodbine
Date:
Description: Please join the Woodbine Research Group on Sunday June 7th as we present our Roundtable on AI Melancholy. Doors at 6:30pm, event at 7pm.
Following our previous collective inquiries into both Municipal Socialism and Civil War, this month's facilitated discussion will explore the tech economy's uneven distribution of gains from its recent boom; AI's implementation in ongoing military fronts, including the genocide in Gaza; as well as the social relations AI presupposes and strives to produce. We'll try to respond to recent texts on AI from authors ranging from NYC Comptroller Mark Levine and Pope Leo XIV, to Bernie Sanders and Peter Thiel.
Members of the Woodbine Research Group will open up the event with a series of short presentations, followed by an open discussion. We hope to help formulate a cultural, ethical, and strategic orientation to the changing technological reality. How and where is power held and deployed today? What continuities and fissures with previous forms of governance can we identify? If the technological infrastructures and imaginaries emerging from Silicon Valley have an ever expanding grasp on our material conditions, what forms of organization are required to contend with these new mechanisms of control? What are the stakes, possibilities, and limits of a Neo-Luddism in 2026?

Description: The titular twosome are childhood friends—Alice (Yū Aoi) forthcoming; Hana (Anne Suzuki), withholding—whose bond slackens when they arrive at high school and begin to discover boys, one of whom Hana bamboozles into being her boyfriend by convincing him he’s had a bout of amnesia. Developed from a series of shorts that Iwai made for KitKat chocolate bars in Japan, with a lush, wistful chamber music score by the filmmaker himself, Hana and Alice is as sprightly and light-footed as All About Lily Chou-Chou was dark and brooding, but both films are united by their experimentation with the new possibilities of digital cinematography and their rare understanding of the turbulent emotions of teenagers.

Opening Reception for ANIMAL [the listening gym] program
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date: -
Description: Pioneer Works is pleased to present ANIMAL [the listening gym], a physical listening environment that renders the body a conduit for sound. Conceived by artist and composer Ash Fure in collaboration with architect Xavi Aguirre (stock-a-studio), the exhibition features a custom-built system of contact-driven architectural machines designed to confront listeners with the physical force of sound. Riffing off the logics of circuit workouts, these stations amp the senses, corral the focus, and activate a heightened relational field that functions entirely outside language.

Description: An interest in people living precarious and transitory existences being one unifying feature of Rosi’s filmography, it is perhaps unsurprising that he would be drawn to Mount Vesuvius, the Phlegraean Fields volcanic caldera, and the sections of Naples close enough to both to feel their foreboding tremors. Archaeologists continue to extract artifacts buried by eruptions past while the general population steel themselves for the possibility that what happened to Pompeii long ago might happen again. While closely attuned to the specificities of the region in which it was shot, Below the Clouds speaks volumes about quotidian life in a world teetering on the precipice of disaster. Description: The small Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, an Italian territory located between Sicily and Tunisia, would be the temporary home to hundreds of thousands of refugees during the European migrant crisis that peaked in 2015. In the delicately detailed Fire at Sea, winner of the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival, Rosi shows us daily life in Lampedusa, a routine that encompasses coast guard rescue operations and medical emergencies, yes, but also the quotidian routines of the local fishermen, going about their business as they have for generations. “The film’s subject is… elusive, at once more below the radar and beyond the reach of political discourse… Impressionistic and intensely absorbing… Compels you to infer a big picture from a series of extended, intimate scenes.” —The New York Times

Drawing inspiration from Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, Rosi draws us into a world seen only as a passing blur by commuters—his subjects including a scientist studying the damage wrought by beetles on area trees, a nostalgia-prone eel fisherman, and a DJ specializing in Mexican pop—his film both potentially endless in scope and humbly intimate in execution. Description: The surviving fragments of Gaius Petronius’s 1st century AD satire were adapted by Fellini into this appropriately disjointed, disorienting travelogue through an ancient Rome, extravagantly and outlandishly imagined—with significant inspiration drawn from the contemporary counterculture—on the vast soundstages of Cinecittà. Consumed by desire for young androgyne Gitone (Max Born), Encolpio (Martin Potter) is tossed about on the turbulent surface of a destabilized Roman society defined by wanton cruelty, garish display, pansexual licentiousness, unchecked gluttony, and general hedonism. A heaping helping of cinematic panem et circenses from the maestro, drawing provocative parallels between the Empire in decadent decline and contemporary consumerist Europe.

Description: Pasolini’s so-called “Trilogy of Life" films, adapted from canonical, world-historical story collections, represented a break from his experimental works of the late 1960s like Porcile and Teorema—films which he came to judge as existing too much in the realm of pure alienation and detachment. Determined to create a new popular cinema, he produced this bawdy, blissy, sun-kissed adaptation of Boccaccio’s 14th-century classic, its various chapters linked together by a framing device featuring Pasolini himself as a Giottolike painter. One of Pasolini’s lightest and most lovable films.

Science + Fiction: Kim Stanley Robinson
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: Join us for a journey where science and fiction, observation and fantasy, and nature and technology intertwine to spark new ideas for Earth’s future. A titan of speculative fiction, Kim Stanley Robinson has spent decades crafting blueprints for how humanity might survive its own making—from terraforming the Red Planet in his seminal Mars trilogy to the flooded, yet resilient, streets of Manhattan in New York 2140. Where others see only the abyss of the climate crisis, Robinson sees a logistical and political challenge, famously proposing a "Ministry for the Future" to advocate for generations of the unborn.
On this evening, Robinson joins Pioneer Works Director of Sciences, the astrophysicist and author Janna Levin, for a career-spanning conversation. Together, they will navigate the dense intersections of ecological sustainability, revolutionary economic restructuring, and the sheer technical audacity required to keep a planet habitable.
Looking back on a life spent dreaming of “2312” and beyond, Robinson will reflect on his impact as a literary provocateur and offer his latest predictions for our species. In the KSR-universe, utopia isn't a destination, it’s a direction. In an age of mounting anxiety, can we even find—let alone make—our way forward?
After the conversation, look to distant worlds and stargaze with the Amateur Astronomers Association.
About the speakers
Kim Stanley Robinson is an American science fiction writer. His most recent books are The Ministry for the Future and The High Sierra: A Love Story. He went to Antarctica in 1995 and 2016, courtesy of the US National Science Foundation. He was a featured speaker at COP26 in 2021, at the UN’s Summit of the Future in 2024, and at COP-30 in Belém, Brazil. His work has been translated into 30 languages. In 2016, asteroid 72432 was named “Kimrobinson.”
Janna Levin is the Founding Director of Sciences at Pioneer Works and the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Pioneer Works Broadcast. She is a professor of physics and astronomy at Barnard College of Columbia University. A Guggenheim Fellow, Janna has contributed to an understanding of black holes and cosmology. She is the presenter of the NOVA feature Black Hole Apocalypse, aired on PBS. She writes books about math, physics, and cosmology, including a PEN award winning work of first fiction. Her most recent book is Black Hole Survival Guide.
Our signature Science vs Fiction series is inspired by the idea that scientific discovery and fictional world-building can be complementary. Each is driven by a love of complexity, a curiosity about the workings of the universe, and the capacity to imagine alternative realities or entirely new worlds. We celebrate filmmakers, authors, and artists for whom science and fiction, observation and fantasy, nature and technology, intertwine to spark new ideas in science and beyond.
This program is supported by the Simons Foundation's Science, Society and Culture division.

Description: Cronenberg has never exactly worked in the register of naturalism, and his just-off, stranded-in-the-uncanny-valley style fits this white-knuckle sci-fi thriller—following a game designer on the run after finding herself in the crosshairs of an assassination plot—as snugly as an UmbyCord plugging into a well-lubed bio-port. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jude Law co-star in a mindbending, mordantly funny sort-of-sequel to Cronenberg’s classic Videodrome updated for the dawn of the virtual reality era, exploring Ballardian themes of flesh yielding to new technology while whipping the viewer around countless hairpin-turn plot swerves. “One of the great underappreciated movies of the late 1990s.” —J. Hoberman

Description: Co-written by James Schamus and Wang Hui-ling, Lee’s gently comic family fable about a semi-retired master chef and his three daughters, the director’s only film shot entirely in his native Taiwan, is arguably the best movie about how food can connect generations ever made. The cooking scenes, rapturously shot by cinematographer Jon Lin, capture the magic, majesty, and diversity of Taiwanese cuisine, but it’s the quiet, world-weary performance by Sihung Lung as the elder chef and widower father of three daughters (played by Yang Kuei-mei, Wu Chien-lien, and Wang Yu-wen) that gives the film its heart and soul. “Wonderfully seductive, and nicely knowing about all of its characters’ appetites.” —The New York Times

Opening Reception for Ash Fure program
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date: -
Description: Join Pioneer Works for a public opening celebration of ANIMAL [the listening gym], a physical listening environment that renders the body a conduit for sound.
Over the past decade, Fure has forged a reputation for creating visceral installation-performances that defy musical convention, premiering works at major international venues (Lincoln Center, MOCA Geffen, Berghain) while garnering significant honors (Rome Prize, Guggenheim, Creative Capital, FCA Grant-for-Artists, DAAD, Pulitzer Finalist). As her first major public installation, ANIMAL [the listening gym] marks a significant foray into the art world.
"My challenge was to translate the sensory intensity and spatial dynamism I can bring through live performance to an enter-anytime installation format," Fure notes. To do this, she turned toward other models of body-forward co-presence. “The gym and the club are two of the only cultural containers I know that invite a kind of private/public, alone/together embodied intensity. No pressure to perform the self through words; just the body and its edges, the energy and its limits, each on their own adrenaline ride."
ANIMAL [the listening gym] manifests as a cyclical, durational form that compels a kind of generative loitering: a sustained encounter with sound and time outside the performer/listener divide. Visitors navigate the installation at their own pace, physically engaging the listening gym machines to drive sound straight into their bodies. Around them unfolds an orchestrated atmosphere of spatial sound and shifting light—from seismic waves of bass to the edge of silence, from total saturation to near darkness—exercising sensory capacities at their limits.
Built to move, scale, and shift, the architecture draws on non-static construction techniques. Aguirre adds, "The gym machines are designed not as fixed objects, but as change-ready systems—structures that anticipate their own movement, disassembly, and reinvention. Each machine is both infrastructure and invitation—robust yet itinerant, durable yet open—ready to roll up and occupy new spaces without losing material value or social intensity.”
ANIMAL [the listening gym] will be paired with a series of live performances and activations that build on its themes. The exhibition is an evolution of a prior installation-performance presented and commissioned by Yale's Schwarzman Center in 2023. Conceived as modular and scalable, since then, it has taken multiple forms. As a solo performance work titled ANIMAL [for body and sound], it has toured through festivals around the world (Big Ears, Long Play, Unsound, IRCAM, CTM, MUTEK, and many others) and was also released as a studio album on Smalltown Supersound. In late 2026, it will further expand into ANIMAL [the underground], a site-specific sonic takeover of a cavernous concrete basement and emptied swimming pool in LA, presented by The Industry.
About the Artists
Ash Fure’s full-bodied sonic experiences work on the senses in startling ways. Called “purely visceral” and “staggeringly original” by The New Yorker, the artist’s live performances and total installations mobilize the elemental force of sound, the social muscle of listening and our animal capacity to sense. Winner of a 2025 Creative Capital Grant, she has also received two Lincoln Center Emerging Artists Awards, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Rome Prize in Music Composition, a DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Prize, an FCA Grant for Artists, a Fulbright Fellowship to France, a Stuttgart Composition Prize, a Darmstadt Kranichsteiner Musikpreis, and a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship from Columbia University. Fure holds a PhD in Music Composition from Harvard University, is Professor of Sonic Arts at Dartmouth College, and served as co-artistic director of The Industry LA from 2021 to 2024.
Xavi L. Aguirre is an Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Architecture, as well as the Founder and Director of the award-winning architectural design practice stock-a-studio. At MIT, he is the Director of DIS-ASSEMBLIES LAB, where his work focuses on learning from and designing for when architectures come apart. Through building (and unbuilding) projects, research, and product development, he considers our relationship to material and commodity circulations, both technically as well as culturally. Aguirre was one of the representatives for the US Pavilion at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale, the recipient of the 2022 Architectural League Prize, and the 2018 Muschenheim Design Fellowship, among other awards.
Ash Fure: ANIMAL [the listening gym] is organized by Adam Shore. It is supported, in part, by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council, as well as the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

ANIMAL [the listening gym]
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date: -
Description: Join Pioneer Works for a public opening celebration of ANIMAL [the listening gym], a physical listening environment that renders the body a conduit for sound.

Description: Filmed over the course of some three years on the borders of Iraq, Kurdistan, Lebanon, and Syria, a corner of the world that had descended into lawlessness and violence following the invasion of a US-led coalition and the subsequent emergence of ISIS as a regional power, Rosi’s lyrical, largely nocturnal film is a patient, contemplative, and deeply emotional study of unimaginable suffering and endurance. “Rosi has a way of sitting with people, sometimes close-up, more often from afar, and soaking in their lived experience and the pulse of landscapes shaped by brutal external forces… His melancholic documentary moves beyond a sense of perpetual aftermath by picking up threads of continuity in people’s resilience… [Rosi] excels at uncovering scenes of drama and emotion without leveraging them for sentimental impact.” —The New York Times

This Long Century presents Ben River
Venue: Metrograph
Date:
Description: To celebrate the release of Ben Rivers’s latest feature, Mare’s Nest (2025), This Long Century presents a program of three films by the British artist and filmmaker, a formative figure in experimental cinema whose prolific body of work moves seamlessly between documentary, fiction, and myth. With his mid-length film Slow Action (2010), Rivers imagines a distant future in which rising seas have reduced the Earth to a scattering of isolated islands. Structured as four travelogues, the film draws on narration written together with science-fiction author Mark von Schlegell to conjure fictional utopian societies from real, remote locations, while refusing the familiar violence of post-collapse cinema in favor of something stranger and more mythic. Ah, Liberty! (2008) is a more personal film, rooted in Rivers’s own childhood memories of derelict buildings that served as a playground for him and his friends. This freedom, which feels feral and unstable, is captured here in grainy, hand-processed 16mm black and white, playing out like a half-remembered dream. Finally, Ijen/London (2022) follows a young woman on a quest for a mythical city, finding only a vast toxic swamp of sulphurous flames and chemical smoke. With Herbert Read’s poem “The Autumn of the World” drifting across this devastated landscape, Rivers creates a bleak, beautiful experience that is very hard to shake.” —Series curator Jason Evans, This Long Century

Description: ANIMAL [a listening gym] transforms the gallery into a sensory-intensive environment that renders the body a conduit for sound. Conceived by artist and composer Ash Fure in collaboration with architect Xavi L. Aguirre (stock-a-studio), the installation riffs on the spatial and behavioral logics of gyms, reimagining athletic equipment as a series of sonic sculptures activated through friction, pressure, and movement.
Over the past decade, Fure has developed a practice that foregrounds the physical force of sound, creating visceral installation-performances that challenge conventional notions of music. In ANIMAL [a listening gym], amplified frequencies and spatialized audio circulate through steel-clad structures that invite viewers to press, lean, lift, loiter, and observe. Shifting fields of light move in sync with the sound—from total saturation to near darkness, from seismic bass to the edge of silence—exercising perception to its limits. These moves activate a body-borne form of listening, one that situates sound not as a passive backdrop, but as a dynamic experience that unfolds through the body itself.
At the core of the project is an interest in forms of collective experience organized through shared sensation rather than speech. “The gym and the club are two of the only cultural containers I know that invite a kind of private/public, alone/together intensity,” Fure notes. “No pressure to perform the self through words; just the body and its edges, the energy and its limits, each on their own adrenaline ride.”
First commissioned by the Yale Schwarzman Center in 2023, ANIMAL [a listening gym] is part of an ongoing, shifting project that includes performances, an album recording, and future site-specific installations, including an upcoming expansion presented by The Industry in Los Angeles in late 2026. To adapt across these contexts, Aguirre designs the built environment as a change-ready system, a scalable kit-of-parts construction intended for movement, disassembly, and reconfiguration. "I treated the architecture itself as a form of portable equipment in service of the body, ready to adapt to new contexts without losing material value or social intensity," he writes. Across its many forms, ANIMAL asks how sound can ignite the body’s capacity to sense, endure, and connect.

Bendik Giske, Pavel Milyakov, MOTHERBOARD, Relaxer b2b Baby Leo program
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: On Sunday, June 21st, Dripping returns to Pioneer Works for their second annual showcase with Bendik Giske, Pavel Milyakov, and MOTHERBOARD with Saint Just. Dripping founders Relaxer and Baby Leo will DJ between artists, setting the tone for the night. This lineup follows up the fourth edition of Dripping’s annual festival, a three-night camping event in Sparta, NJ that has become one of the most anticipated events of the year for people with equal interests in the avant garde and the electronic club underground. Self-described as “a boundary-expanding rave bound by no genre or format,” Dripping’s curation has spanned from experimental DJs, modern composers, live electronic acts, dub pioneers, noise artists, clowns, authors, poets, and much, much more. For this event, Dripping invites Pavel Milyakov to extend his stay following two sets at the festival. The artist, also known as Buttechno, has become something of a folk hero for fans of leftfield electronic music. His body of work spans moody club music, dank atmospherics, fascinating re-interpretations of new age, haunting compositional work, and beyond. There’s a deep emotional undercurrent and an undeniable honesty to all his work. He presents a special concert of new experimental material. Saxophone virtuoso Bendik Giske is another Dripping alumni. One of the most blindingly capable instrumentalists working today, Giske combines extended technique, circular breathing, and unorthodox mic’ing techniques to transform the saxophone into a full ensemble. But this technical facility wouldn’t mean much if Giske’s music weren’t as arresting as it is. His tightly-controlled sonic deluges are stunningly beautiful, at times harrowing journeys. MOTHERBOARD is the new project from vocalist Kyle Kidd, a generational vocal talent whose singing is unmistakable and shockingly powerful. Through deep hypnotic neo-soul, spiritual dance music, gospel and opera, MOTHERBOARD embodies a wide-ranging lineage of Black music. To hear Kidd sing is to be instantly riveted; they channel pure spirit with stunning technique and a profound presence. MOTHERBOARD kicks off Dripping 2026 with the first music of the weekend.

Description: On June 25, join us for a special performance by composer, producer, musician, DJ, and record label founder Laurel Halo. This summer, Halo returns to Pioneer Works after her lastest release, 𝙈𝙞𝙙𝙣𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙕𝙤𝙣𝙚, with new solo material for piano and electronics, combining delicate jazz harmony, deep ambient atmosphere, acousmatic sleight of hand, and soundsystem impact to create an immersive sonic narrative, In the Main Hall, she will perform a live ambient piano piece, preceded by a performance by exhibiting artist and past collaborator, Ash Fure. This concert takes place within artist Ash Fure’s site-specific installation, ANIMAL [the listening gym]. Learn more about the exhibition here. About the artists Laurel Halo is a Los Angeles-based composer, producer, recording artist, and musician. Her music is known for its depth and sense of presence, melding the materiality and spirituality of sound to focus on concepts of transmission, memory, and impermanence. Drawing influence from musique concrète, film score, and jazz, she uses both organic and inorganic sound materials, an extensive studio-as-instrument practice, and a deep appreciation for harmony to create her signature sound across a stylistically diverse catalog. She has toured and presented work around the world at places including the Barbican Centre, Ina-GRM, the Sydney Opera House, Kölner Philharmonie, Unsound Festival, and the Julia Stoschek Foundation, among others. She has collaborated with musicians, artists, and designers, including Moritz von Oswald, Metahaven, Kevin Beasley, Julia Holter, Hanne Lippard, John Cale, Leila Bordreuil, Julian Charrière, and the London Contemporary Orchestra. The album Atlas (LP, 2023), the first on her Awe imprint, was met with wide acclaim. Ash Fure’s full-bodied sonic experiences work on the senses in startling ways. Called “purely visceral” and “staggeringly original” by The New Yorker, the artist’s live performances and total installations mobilize the elemental force of sound, the social muscle of listening, and our animal capacity to sense.

Science & Society: Vaccines program
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date: -
Description: Join us for an urgent conversation on vaccines, trust, and the fractures that have made immunization one of the most contested questions in America. Vaccines have saved more lives than almost any other human invention. They’re so effective that the diseases they prevented all but disappeared from collective memory. Now, childhood immunization rates are falling. Measles, declared eliminated in 2000, is back. Federal agencies are being reshaped by officials who have questioned whether vaccines work at all. And a growing movement of influencers, parents, and politicians is challenging not just individual shots but the very idea that public health is a shared obligation. So, where did this come from, what is actually going on, and what do we do about it? How did vaccines become one of the defining political fault lines of this moment—and how can trust in public health be repaired? David Wallace-Wells, columnist and writer at The New York Times and author of The Uninhabitable Earth, hosts a conversation with Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, infectious disease physician and former director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, and Jessica Malaty Rivera, infectious disease epidemiologist and science communicator whose research focuses on trust in public health. Come early to engage with local community biology lab, Genspace, who will bring hands-on microscope stations, interactive displays, and a community question wall to invite visitors into an open conversation about vaccines and the immune system. Science & Society: Vaccines responds to Jordan Eagles's concurrent exhibition Bases Loaded, on view in the 3rd floor gallery. The exhibition asks: what is in our blood, and who is allowed to belong—to a team, a family, a nation? In the garden, stargazing with the Amateur Astronomers' Association will open and conclude the night, weather permitting. Please note that seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Description: Is wrestling a sport? Everyone asks if wrestlers are athletes or performers. They’re asking the wrong question. Instead, they should consider: What athlete isn’t a performer?
PRODUCE celebrates the minds, bodies, and creative spirit of professional wrestlers. It’s wrestling that celebrates the talent, curated for fans who know ball, and those who’d like to learn—or learn to love it.
Each edition is co-produced (booked and curated) by an active professional wrestler, who co-headlines and helps construct the undercard to introduce new talent to a broader audience. Every show features a musical act or DJ chosen with the input of that edition’s co-producer.
For this edition, PRODUCE features SUPERFIGHT, a headlining match between Jonathan Gresham and Fuminori Abe, plus appearances by Joey Janela, Effy, LaBron Kozone, Mance Warner, Steph de Lander, Man Like Dereiss, AEW Women’s Pure Champion Deonna Purrazzo, “Hot Sauce” Tracy Williams, Mad Dog Connelly, and many more.
PRODUCE also spotlights both local and world-renowned talent inside and outside of the ring—including musicians, photographers, content creators, graphic designers, visual artists, and apparel makers.
PRODUCE is presented by Orange Crush, and co-produced by Jonathan Gresham.

BUILDING by Colin Quinn and Vincent Piazza program
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date: -
Description: Join us on July 7 & 8, 2026 for BUILDING, an immersive theatrical experience created by Colin Quinn, Vincent Piazza, and John Fitzgerald with an original score by composer Oliver Mayo. Set against the 60th anniversary of the breaking ground of the World Trade Center, BUILDING transforms Pioneer Works’ Main Hall into an experiential portrait of 1970s New York through live performance, architectural environments, projection. Part theater, installation, and social landscape, BUILDING presents a series of interconnected stories and monologues performed by an ensemble cast including Florencia Lozano, Kathrine Narducci, Joe Perrino, Vincent Piazza, and Julia Randall, inspired by the labor, humor, tensions, and ambitions surrounding one of the city’s most consequential civic projects. Audiences are invited to move through a living environment populated by crane operators, office managers, food vendors, security guards, developers, and other workers whose lives became intertwined with the rise of the Twin Towers. Combining archival material, spatial audio, live environmental effects, and cinematic storytelling, BUILDING operates simultaneously as theater, installation, and social landscape. Rather than reconstructing the World Trade Center itself, the work considers the labor, contradictions, aspirations, and emotional residue embedded within its creation.

False Harmonics #26: Conrad Tao, Aaron Turner & Randall Dunn, Charmaine Lee
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: This evening takes the body as its premise—not as metaphor, but as material. What happens to a performer at the threshold of physical endurance? What does sustained, extreme sound do to the body that produces it, and the body that receives it? Brought together by curator and vocalist Charmaine Lee, the four artists on this program have each built practices that refuse the separation of sound from flesh. Music made at the edge of what the body can sustain, and transformed by that pressure.
The evening unfolds in three sets. Pianist Conrad Tao opens with a solo program pairing Elliott Carter's Catenaires and Galina Ustvolskaya's Piano Sonata No. 6 with the world premiere of Φ (II), a new work written for Tao by composer Eric Wubbels. Charmaine Lee follows with a solo set for voice and feedback. The evening closes with a duo performance by producer and multi-instrumentalist Randall Dunn and guitarist/vocalist Aaron Turner, driving sound into the body at subsonic frequencies.
This program is guest-curated by Charmaine Lee and presented as part of Pioneer Works' False Harmonics series, in conjunction with the exhibition ANIMAL [the listening gym] by Ash Fure.
About the artists
Conrad Tao is a pianist and composer known for work that spans classical performance and cross-genre collaboration. He appears regularly as a soloist with leading orchestras and at major venues worldwide, and has been praised by The New York Times for his "probing intellect and open-hearted vision." His recent collaborators include dancer Caleb Teicher, choreographer Miguel Gutierrez, artist Avram Finkelstein, vocalist Charmaine Lee, and The Westerlies. He is also a member of the Junction Trio with Stefan Jackiw and Jay Campbell. Tao is a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Gilmore Young Artist Award, and a New York Dance and Performance "Bessie" Award.
Aaron Turner is a musician and visual artist who has been performing and recording since 1995. Best known as a founding member of Isis and SUMAC, he is also a member of Neurosis, Old Man Gloom, and Pharaoh Overlord, and remains an active collaborator and occasional solo performer. Working primarily on guitar, with parallel practices as vocalist, painter, and illustrator, his work draws on underground metal and punk while often taking deconstructed, improvisational, and longform forms. He has collaborated with Tashi Dorji, Camae Ayewa/Moor Mother, Keiji Haino, Heather Leigh, and Stephen O'Malley, among others. Turner founded Hydra Head Records and later co-founded SIGE Records with Faith Coloccia. He lives on Vashon Island, WA.
Randall Dunn is a producer, composer, and audio engineer whose work moves between experimental music, film, and television. He began his career in 1990s Seattle, studying sound design for film and building lasting collaborations with Eyvind Kang, Wayne Horvitz, Skerik, and Stuart Dempster. He established Circular Ruin in New York City in 2017, which has served as the engine for his film and experimental work — including scores for Panos Cosmatos, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe's Candyman, Benny Safdie's The Curse, and The Smashing Machine. His production credits include albums by Marissa Nadler, Zola Jesus, Kali Malone, Annea Lockwood, Algiers, and Oneohtrix Point Never. He released his solo debut, Beloved, in 2018.
Charmaine Lee is a vocalist and label founder whose work spans improvised music, experimental performance, and creative infrastructure. Born in Sydney to a family from Hong Kong, she studied sociology at Princeton University before training at the New England Conservatory with guitarist and theorist Joe Morris, developing an approach grounded in active listening, risk, and relational exchange. She maintains collaborations with Conrad Tao, Ikue Mori, Eric Wubbels, JACK Quartet, among others. Together with Randall Dunn, Lee runs Kou Records, a New York-based label devoted to artists with singular musical languages.

Hurley’s work straddles the landscape between musical composition and atmospheric sound design. His unique sonic approach weaves tapestry-like collagescapes from ambient textures, tape loops, samples, comb-filtering, and more…with a live show that showcases his signature sonic atmospheres live to picture.
C. Lavender (Lavender Suarez) is an interdisciplinary sound artist, sound healing practitioner, and educator based in New York City. She is the author of "Transcendent Waves: How Listening Shapes Our Creative Lives," a contemplative artist’s workbook that explores how listening can spark creativity, foster self-awareness, and cultivate mindfulness. Bandcamp describes her music as having "curative powers," yet also being confrontational, "primed to change you whether or not you want it to."
C. Lavender has held three pivotal roles that closely align with her artistic practice: she served as the first sound design educator at the Museum of the Moving Image (NYC), managed the studio and archive of one of the largest private vintage synthesizer collections in the U.S., and assisted the late “Deep Listening” composer Pauline Oliveros.

Description: For over two decades, Baltimore-based composer Dan Deacon has built a singular musical universe—one where ecstatic synth compositions, philosophical curiosity, and radical joy collide. Expanding the visionary world of albums like Mystic Familiar (2020), Deacon’s work channels both absurdity and profundity, transforming personal reflection into sweeping sonic landscapes. At the Pioneer Works Main Hall, these kaleidoscopic songs will become participatory spectacles: a room full of strangers moving together through waves of sound, guided by Deacon’s boundless energy and belief in music’s power to connect us.

The evening opens with performances by Macula Dog and MSHR. New York duo Macula Dog channels discordant electronic art-pop into immersive performances that merge sound, performance art, and surreal spectacle. Meanwhile, the Portland-based art collective MSHR constructs living audiovisual ecosystems from handmade electronic instruments, weaving light, circuitry, and human presence into hypnotic sculptural compositions.
Together, the artists trace a spectrum of experimental electronic practice—from cybernetic installations and art-pop performance to Deacon’s radiant, communal sound.

Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: This fall 2026, Horse Lords bring their _Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive!_ tour to Pioneer Works, presenting an expanded live performance of their latest album. Formed in Baltimore in 2010, the quartet—Sam Haberman, Owen Gardner, Max Eilbacher, and Andrew Bernstein—is known for their tightly interlocking rhythms and adventurous approach to composition. For this show, they’re joined by an extended ensemble of winds and vocalists for 12 original compositions.
_Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive!_ marks a shift in the group’s practice, opening up the band’s precise, pattern-based structures to a wider set of influences and references. Its title nods to a line by Russian Futurist poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, while its sonic and conceptual world draws on sources as varied as Anni Albers’ textile practice, Islamic geometric patterning, Fluxus-era experimentation, and the work of composers like Tom Johnson and Catherine Christer Hennix.

About the artists
For nearly two decades, Colin Stetson has stood as a distinctive voice in contemporary music, known for pushing the saxophone beyond conventional form through circular breathing, percussive mechanics, and multiphonics. His work spans acclaimed solo records, collaborations with artists across experimental and independent music, and celebrated film and television scores including Hereditary, The Menu, and Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen.
Brìghde Chaimbeul has emerged as a leading force in the revival and reimagining of Celtic folk traditions. Rooted in the language and musical heritage of the Isle of Skye, her work with the Scottish smallpipes transforms traditional forms into hypnotic, minimalist compositions that feel timeless and exploratory at once. Her recent recordings have earned international acclaim for their emotional depth and fearless approach to tradition.
Together, the pair create a sound that is elemental and transportive: waves of breath, reed, resonance, and silence unfolding in real time. All the Light in the World captures the rare chemistry between two artists who approach folk and experimental music not as fixed genres, but as living, evolving languages.

About the artists
A Winged Victory for the Sullen are an ambient music project by composers and frequent collaborators Adam Wiltzie and Dustin O’Halloran. The duo met in Italy many years ago and initially only intended to release a single record as A Winged Victory for the Sullen, but the project has continued to live on and the pair have recorded a total of four full length albums, an EP and a soundtrack since forming in 2011.
In 2013, A Winged Victory for the Sullen were commissioned by famed choreographer Wayne McGregor to compose the score for his critically acclaimed dance piece Atomos. This music would form the basis for their second album, Atomos (2014, Erased Tapes). Another high note came in 2015, when Mary Anne Hobbs invited A Winged Victory for the Sullen to perform at the BBC Proms. In 2019, the two were commissioned to write the score for Leo Warner’s Invisible Cities, a large site-specific stage production, which premiered at the Manchester International Festival in July 2019. Also in 2019, they partnered with Ninja Tune to release their critically acclaimed album The Undivided Five, which NPR named as their album of the week, with one writer calling it: “One of the most beautiful records I’ve heard this year’’.
In 2021, they released their album Invisible Cities – an adaptation of their original soundtrack for the theatre production of the same name. The album adaptation broke into the top 15 of the UK album charts in its first week of release, and was endorsed by tastemakers such as Pop Matters, NPR, Clash and Pitchfork.
After touring the EU and UK in early 2020 with an immersive show, the Covid-19 pandemic forced them to cancel the North American leg. Now in 2026 they will finally bring the show to North America, performing there for the first time in 10 years.
Pan•American is the electronic music project of guitarist and producer Mark Nelson—also of abstract rock pioneers, Labradford. Over 20 years, he has released a string of acclaimed solo recordings exploring the quiet intersections of dub, electronica, song craft and ambient music. His most recent record Fly the Ocean in a Silver Plane was release in April 2026.

Description: This fall 2026, Horse Lords bring their Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive! tour to Pioneer Works. Formed in Baltimore in 2010, the quartet—Sam Haberman, Owen Gardner, Max Eilbacher, and Andrew Bernstein—is known for their tightly interlocking rhythms and adventurous approach to composition.
Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive! marks a shift in the group’s practice, opening up the band’s precise, pattern-based structures to a wider set of influences and references.
About the artist
Horse Lords is a Baltimore-founded experimental quartet formed in 2010, emerging from the city’s noise and leftfield rock scene. Known for their rhythmically intricate, genre-spanning approach, the group—Sam Haberman, Owen Gardner, Max Eilbacher, and Andrew Bernstein—has released numerous albums and collaborated widely, including with composer Arnold Dreyblatt. Now split between the U.S. and Germany, they continue to expand their sound and ensemble. Their latest album, Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive!, extends their exploratory practice through new instrumentation and a wide-ranging set of musical and conceptual influences.

False Harmonics #26: Conrad Tao, Aaron Turner & Randall Dunn, Charmaine Lee program
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date: -
Description: This evening takes the body as its premise—not as metaphor, but as material.

Description: Pioneer Works is excited to present Son Lux performing for two nights on December 18-19 in our Main Hall, along with an onsite video installation.
This December 2026, Son Lux presents an immersive audiovisual installation built around a new composition from their forthcoming album, Out Into (September 12, 2026). Expanding the language of the music video into a spatial, embodied experience, the work transforms a single song into an expressionistic landscape of sound and image.
Rather than fragmenting music into fleeting moments optimized for endless circulation, the performance reclaims slowness, atmosphere, and collective attention. Video and sound unfold in tandem, drawing audiences into an evolving environment where abstraction, repetition, and emotional resonance take precedence over narrative clarity or algorithmic immediacy.
At the center of the installation is a newly created single-channel film with stereo sound, presented as a continuous 17-minute loop. The work invites viewers to inhabit the emotional and sensory world of the song, expanding its themes through immersive scale, texture, and duration.
