Homeroom: Red Canary Song Touch the Heart
Venue: MoMA PS1
Date:
Description: As part of Greater New York 2026, Queens-based collective Red Canary Song presents their Homeroom project Touch the Heart, whose title is a translation of the Cantonese phrase “dim sum.” Mirroring the infrastructures that sustain its community, the installation presents four dim sum dining tables to illustrate stories of migration, bodily care and desire, grieving and longing, and provisions of cultural heritage. The presentation also features portraits that memorialize workers who have passed, and still lifes by artist Augustina Wang that document the personal belongings of those who remain. Red Canary Song primarily organizes around food and tea, where harm reduction supplies circulate alongside dirty jokes, and daily crisis management accompanies karaoke—together, the contributions to Touch the Heart envision methodologies for shared refuge.
Red Canary Song is a grassroots collective led by migrant massage and sex workers across the Asian diaspora, and formed in 2017 in response to the death of Yang Song, a migrant Chinese massage worker killed during a police raid in Queens. Since then, Red Canary Song has expanded into a mutual aid network that foregrounds the experiences of directly impacted workers, providing groceries, cash assistance, translation services, and connection to legal support and person-first health care.

Labor & Adornment: Radical Craft
Venue: Superhouse Gallery
Date: -
Description: Superhouse is pleased to present “Labor & Adornment: Radical Craft,” a group exhibition bringing together twelve artists who approach craft as a living language shaped through material and process.
Working across wood, fiber, glass, ceramic, and basketry, the artists explore how adornment and labor operate as forms of cultural expression. Domestic furniture, weaving, needlework, and stained glass become sites for experimentation and reinterpretation, revealing the histories, identities, and material knowledge embedded in making.
The exhibition reflects a broader collapse of hierarchies between art, design, and craft, positioning handwork, ornament, and material intelligence as central forces within contemporary art and design.

Description: In December 2013, Kyiv’s Independence Square was flooded with peaceful protesters expressing their sense of betrayal at President Viktor Yanukovych’s abrupt decision not to sign the European Union-Ukraine Association Agreement. A few months later, more than a hundred Ukrainian citizens were dead at the hands of police, the widely revered Yanukovych had fled to exile in Russia’s arms, and Loznitsa, on the ground to capture all of the above, had the raw materials of this stark, formally disciplined witness-bearing work, a testament to the collective power of a people united in common cause. “Easily the most rigorous, vital, and powerful movie of 2014… A perfect Bazinian cinema-machine – reality is captured, crystallized, honored for its organic complexity, and delivered unpoisoned by exposition or emphasis.” —The Village Voice
Distributor: Atoms & Void
Introduction by director Sergei Loznitsa on Saturday, March 21st

Description: Das Erste Mal presents the very first video works by contemporary artists. These eccentric short films offer a glimpse into the experimental foundations of their makers. What makes these early videos compelling is their lack of pretense—their bare will to express, an intuition that precedes style, and a curiosity that overrides calculation. Each work carries a tangible feeling of discovery, revealing how the immediacy of the moving image allows for accidents and unfiltered emotion—moments when the camera becomes an instrument for thinking, trying, and failing in real time.
Participating artist include Korakrit Arunanondchai, Joey Frank, Cayetano Ferrer, Henry Gunderson, John Henderson, Georg Herold, Riley Hooker, Gregory Kalliche, Anna K.E., Prem Krishnamurthy, Nathaniel de Large, Vijay Masharani, Florian Meisenberg, Monica Mirabile, Agnieszka Polska, Ben Rivers, Rachel Rossin, Jacolby Satterwhite, Jeremy Shaw, Marianna Simnett, John Smith, Viktor Timofeev, and Lawrence Weiner.
Das Erste Mal has been screened at the Shoreditch Arts Club in London, Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover Kunstmuseum Bonn and the Hotel Warszawa Art Fair. The program is conceived and curated by artist and curator Florian Meisenberg.

Description: “In the pictorial structure of Okraina [Outskirts] there is something of Chekhov’s plays,” wrote influential Soviet film historian Nikolai Lebedev, citing Barnet’s unpredictable musical interweave of comic and tragicomic tones, and his layered command of ensemble performance, in this singular poetic masterpiece—a digressive, multi-character chronicle of a restive border town rocked by labor strife, the outbreak of World War I, and ultimately the coming October Revolution. Featuring Barnet’s then-wife Yelena Kuzmina as Manka, the daughter of a local cobbler who falls in love with a happy-go-lucky German POW, the film advances a vision of internationalist solidarity that the Nazi rise that same year would soon render unimaginable. Introduction by Metrograph Programmer Edo Choi and The Theater of the Matters on Saturday, March 21st. Part of Boris Barnet A Soviet Poet.

Description: A coproduction of Moscow-based Mezhrabpom and Azerbaijani studio Azerfilm, shot on location along the celestial Caspian coast, Barnet’s strangest and most enchanting work tells the fable-like tale of Yussuf and Alyosha, shipwrecked companions vying for the love of Mariya (Yelena Kuzmina at her most radiant), the comely leader of an island kolkhoz named Lights of Communism. A cherished touchstone for Henri Langlois and through him the “Young Turks” of the French New Wave, By the Bluest of Seas contains images—of a sun setting behind crashing waves, of a pearl necklace coming apart in slow motion—as indelible as any in cinema.

Creative Time presents: Chloë Bass Record Release Party
Venue: Public Records
Date: -
Description: If you hear something, free something Record release party with Chloë Bass Presented by Creative Time and MTA Arts and Design
Join Creative Time on Tuesday, March 24 from 6:30 to 9pm at Public Records for the limited vinyl release of If you hear something, free something, a public art project in sound by Chloë Bass presented by Creative Time and MTA Arts & Design.
Pre-order your record here to secure your copy, available for pick up at the release party. A limited number of records will also be available for purchase during the event.
From September 3 to October 5, 2025, artist Chloë Bass debuted her first sound work, If you hear something, free something, a public art commission presented by Creative Time in partnership with MTA Arts & Design. In a monumental and fleeting gesture, Bass interwove 24 poetic announcements into the New York City Transit’s Public Address (PA) system, engaging millions of residents spanning across neighborhoods and social boundaries. Cultivating a practice of everyday care while questioning the usual purposes of public address, Bass played critically with two well-known campaign slogans: “If You See Something, Say Something” and “Courtesy Counts.”
In a sonic gathering of Chloë Bass’s artistic collaborators, the vinyl record for If you hear something, free something, includes the poetic refrains that were echoed and whispered throughout the MTA subway stations. Side A of the vinyl record features recordings from Chloë Bass’s poetics verses, each recited by her collaborators. Side B is a series of remixes by Bill Dietz and Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste of these verses. The vinyl record resounds with the possibilities for connection embedded in ordinary gestures of recognition for those with whom we share public space. Alongside this aural archive, the booklet includes several essays and an interview, each meditating on the liberatory and relational potential of public address.

Maria Somerville, Joanne Robertson, Colle
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: Pioneer Works presents Maria Somerville & Joanne Robertson in our Main Hall on Tuesday, March 24, 2025, with support from Colle.
By the time Irish musician Maria Somerville started writing Luster, her landmark label debut for 4AD, she had lived away from her native Connemara for quite some time. Having grown up amongst the wild, mountainous terrain of Galway’s rural west coast, she later relocated to Dublin, where she patiently developed an atmospheric dream pop signature inspired by the landscape of her youth—a spellbinding soundworld of gusting ambient electronics, ethereal guitar strums, sparse percussion, and hushed lyrical vignettes. In 2019, this culminated in All My People, a self-released LP steeped in reverb, nostalgia and a yearning for home that won praise from discerning press and listeners alike. It was upon returning to Connemara, in a house near where she was raised overlooking one of the country’s largest lakes, Lough Corrib, that work commenced on the songs that would eventually become Luster, an album that illuminates Somerville’s music anew, pushing it forward in both sound and spirit. Where All My People conveyed memories and melancholic longing with misty slowcore balladry, these 12 tracks show us an artist who’s more assured in the path her life has taken, and the person she’s become in the process. As she sings in "Trip"—“I can see more clearly than I could before. I know now what's true for me.”
Joanne Robertson is a musician and painter. Joanne collaborates regularly with her friends, most recently with Dean Blunt on "Backstage Raver," and Sidsel Meineche Hansen on "Alien Baby." She moved to Glasgow in 2018, after having lived in London. Her painting and music both form from improvisatory moments of expression. "Blue Car" is a collection of songs from her archive of unreleased solo recordings, similar to "Painting Stupid Girls," these tracks attempt to record the moment, and where she was at emotionally that day, similar to diary entries. The dates she wrote these songs is unknown, they span roughly a ten year period. Her latest solo record Blurrr is to out from AD 93.
Colle is the project of New York experimental musician Maya McGrory, whose new release, Montalvo, reflects on memory, transformation, and the many lives one can live at once. Blending expansive synths, strings, and trip-hop–inflected beats with her haunting vocals, McGrory crafts immersive soundscapes that move between electronic experimentation and traditional songwriting. Inspired by her childhood on Montalvo Rd., the album traces a journey of rediscovery and emotional connection, revealing a matured artistic voice shaped by her roots in club culture, visual art, and performance. In live shows, often accompanied by Mitchell Hiers’s generative projections, Colle transforms space into a luminous field of sound, light, and memory.

AI Literacy Salon: Beyond Prediction
Venue: Index
Date: -
Description: Most conversations about AI focus on what it can do. This one asks: what does it mean to understand it?
AI Literacy Salon: Beyond Prediction is a conversation about how AI systems actually work, and how that logic shapes the way we think, design, and collaborate. If large language models are fundamentally prediction engines, what gets lost when prediction becomes the dominant mode of interaction with technology?
Facilitated by Nitzan Hermon, the evening brings together voices from design, venture, and knowledge work to explore how practitioners hold onto judgment, craft, and discernment in an AI-assisted world.
Featuring Noa Dolberg (Google Material Design), Cherae Robinson (Flybridge), and Sam Spurlin (Deliberate Works).

Description: Working free spiritedly from a screenplay cowritten by the accomplished comic playwright Nikolai Erdman, once hailed by Maxim Gorky as “our new Gogol,” Barnet spins a lovely shaggy-dog yarn about an aging horse jockey (Ivan Skuratov) who begrudgingly accepts his retirement as stable master in his provincial hometown. Filigreed with ingenious comedic digressions and effortless pictorial flourishes, including a climactic race as thrilling as any committed to film, The Old Jockey presents an impression of common Russian life on the cusp of World War II so richly and irreverently specific that it would be banned as “a slander against Soviet people and a mockery of Soviet village life.”

ACE Presents Cool Hand Luke
Venue: Metrograph
Date:
Description: The story of Luke Jackson (Paul Newman)—an inmate at a tough-as-nails Southern jail who gains the respect of his fellows on the chain gang thanks to his unflappable demeanor and refusal to bow to the authority of tinhorn dictator warden Strother Martin—struck a chord with the emergent anti-establishment counterculture of the late ’60s, and made Rosenberg’s hard-hitting prison picture a sleeper hit. Punchy yet poignant, with invaluable contributions from a peerless supporting cast that includes George Kennedy, Harry Dean Stanton, Dennis Hopper, and Jo Van Fleet, Cool Hand Luke’s rapturous reception also went some ways towards establishing editor Sam O’Steen—his name graced the credits of The Graduate the same year—as one of the most innovative and brilliantly intuitive figures in his field. Distributor: Park Circus Post-screening discussion with film historians Bobbie and Molly O'Steen on Saturday, March 28th

Description: Following the exploits of Red Army Major Fedotov (Pavel Kadochnikov) as he goes behind enemy lines in occupied Ukraine to infiltrate the Nazi high command, Barnet’s crackerjack spy thriller, in which he himself turns in a slyly shaded performance as a Nazi commandant, would prove one of the biggest and most enduring popular successes of his career. Shot at the Kyiv Film Studios with the legendary Ukrainian cameraman Daniil Demutsky (Arsenal, Earth), the angular precision of Barnet’s nationalist victory lap earns it a place alongside the most rousing wartime propaganda films from England and the United States. Once Upon a Night preceded by A Priceless Head
Venue: Metrograph
Date:
Description: Shot at the Yerevan Film Studio in summer 1944 as the Red Army’s major counteroffensive against the Wehrmacht was underway, this moodily abstract wartime thriller stars the luminous Irina Radchenko, in her screen debut, as an orphaned girl who hides three wounded Russian soldiers in the attic of a bombed-out building next door to a Nazi headquarters. Working with Armenian cinematographer Sarkis Gevorkyan on a threadbare set, Barnet conjures a nightmarishly evacuated vision of collective resistance, whose stark chiaroscuro imagery of jagged shadows gliding over rubble or tears streaking a young woman’s face, owes much to Fritz Lang and F.W. Murnau. Preceded by Barnet’s equally excellent propaganda short A Priceless Head, a galvanic account of an immiserated Polish woman who must choose whether to hide a partisan on the lam or inform on him to collect the occupiers’ bounty. A Priceless Head (Fighting Film Album No. 10) (Boris Barnet, 1942, 25 mins, Digital) ) Once Upon a Night (Boris Barnet, 1945, 80 mins, 35mm) 35mm print courtesy of Filmarchiv Austria. Supper Club with Calvin Eng (Bonnie's)
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date: -
Description: Pioneer Works Supper Club is a series of unique dining experiences that build community around food and celebrate local chefs as culinary artists.
This edition of Supper Club features the James Beard-nominated chef of Bonnie's, Calvin Eng, who combines American and Cantonese cuisine to renowned effect. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Eng has become known for bringing his equally nostalgic and inventive takes on cha siu McRibs, MSG martinis, and a Cantonese cacio e pepe to Williamsburg. Bonnie’s pays tribute to Eng’s mother, who taught him everything about Cantonese food and adopted the name “Bonnie” after immigrating to New York from Hong Kong.
The evening accompanies the public exhibition in our second and third floor galleries, The Endless Garment: Atlantic Basin. On view through April 12, the exhibition similarly celebrates the contributions of Asian garment workers—across Taiwan, Ho Chi Minh City, and New York’s Chinatown—whose labor and migration have shaped the fabric of New York.
Supper Club tickets are available to Pioneer Works Members at the $250 level and above. To join, either email members@pioneerworks.org or purchase a membership and ticket bundle via Eventbrite.
Pioneer Works Members will receive an access code to purchase tickets via email.
About the Chef
Calvin Eng is the chef and owner of Bonnie’s, a Cantonese American restaurant in Williamsburg and the author of Salt Sugar MSG, a Cantonese American cookbook. Brooklyn-born and raised in a traditional Chinese family, Eng had been dreaming of opening a restaurant for a decade when he realized how important it was for him to pursue Cantonese food and dive deeper into the dishes of his heritage. Bonnie’s has been praised in the New York Times, The New Yorker, New York magazine, Eater, Bon Appétit, and many more. Eng is a James Beard Emerging Chef finalist, Food & Wine Best New Chef, Forbes 30 under 30 recipient, StarChefs Rising Star, and two-time James Beard Best Chef: New York State Semifinalist.

Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: Pioneer Works is proud to present the long-awaited return of instrumental rock trio The Dirty Three for a rare live performance at Pioneer Works and their first in New York City since 2009.In June 2024, the band released Love Changes Everything, breaking a 12-year wait for new music from the Australian instrumental rock band. Now, the band reunites and sets sail across the ocean for their first North American tour since 2012. To the Main Hall they bring impassioned live performances that stir up a volcanic force each time: plunging into an explosive free fall in one moment, then morphing into a divine pool of emotions in an effortless flow. Like witnessing any supernatural phenomenon, it's an overwhelming experience that stays with you.About The Dirty ThreeLike Tortoise, Gastr del Sol, and, later, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Dirty Three helped reinvent the language of indie rock in the mid-‘90s. Guitarist Mick Turner, drummer Jim White, and violinist Warren Ellis were busy members of the fertile Melbourne scene in the ‘80s, shuttling in and out of assorted scabrous bands. Their collective reputation grew quickly after they formed The Dirty Three in 1992, their savage and unhinged shows in Australian pubs leading to an international record deal and major tours. Horse Stories, Ocean Songs, and Whatever You Love, You Are established them as a truly great improvisational act, reframing the terms of a power trio by adding absolute punk gusto to music that sounds a little like jazz, a little like a string band, and a lot like nothing else. On 2024’s unstoppable Love Changes Everything, their first album in a dozen years, The Dirty Three proved that their vocabulary and chemistry have only expanded.

Venue: Metrograph
Date:
Description: Barnet’s first film shot in the Sovcolor process is unsurprisingly one of his most visually glorious works, a lyrical musical comedy that unfurls an idyllic, Bruegel-esque canvas of collective farming in the Ukrainian countryside. Upon seeing Bountiful Summer, an enraptured Jacques Rivette proclaimed, “Eisenstein apart... Barnet must be considered the best Soviet filmmaker.” While the film’s narrative, surrounding petty romantic and productive rivalries on the kolkhoz, strikes all the obligatory state propagandistic notes, as Rivette argued, “Barnet’s outlook on the world, on the Soviet universe, is one of innocence, but not of an innocent.”

The Wrestler and the Clown
Venue: Metrograph
Date:
Description: Fabulously shot in Sovcolor, this marvelous period melodrama whisks the viewer back to the turn-of-the-century Russian Empire as Ivan Maximovich (Stanislav Chekan), an unemployed carnival wrestler, arrives in Odessa and shortly thereafter meets the aspiring clown Durov (Aleksandr Mikhaylov) on his way to joining the local circus. The pair of artists become fast friends and comrades-in-art in the face of the exploitative abuses of the outfit’s tyrannical ringmaster—a clear Tsarist stand-in, but also perhaps, for Barnet, a cipher for the arbitrary authoritarian whims of Stalinism. “One doesn’t have to be stupid to dislike Barnet’s film,” wrote one Jean-Luc Godard, “but one does have to have a heart of stone.” 35mm print courtesy of Filmarchiv Austria One night only! Ben Lerner: Transcription
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: Join Pioneer Works for the official launch of Ben Lerner's Transcription, a lightning flash of a novel that is at once a gripping emotional drama and a brilliant examination of the devices, digital and literary, we use to store—or to erase—our memories.
The narrator of Ben Lerner’s new book has traveled to Providence, Rhode Island, where he is to conduct what will be the final published interview with Thomas, his 90-year-old mentor and the father of his college friend Max. Thomas is a giant in the arts who seems to hail “from the future and the past simultaneously” and who “reenchants the air” when he speaks. But the narrator drops his smartphone in the hotel sink. He arrives at Thomas’s house with no recording device, a fact he is mysteriously unable to confess.
What unfolds from this dreamlike circumstance is the unforgettable story of the triangle formed by Thomas, Max, and the narrator—an exploration of fathers and sons, male friendship and rivalry, and the challenges of parenting in a burning world. One of the first great novels about the early days of COVID, it is also a brilliant meditation on those technologies that enrich or impoverish our connections to one another. Full of startling insight, but written with the intensity of a séance, Lerner's book shows us how the air is full of messages and ghosts. Ultimately, Transcriptio demonstrates what only a work of fiction can record.
This special launch event will feature a conversation between Ben Lerner and Alexandra Schwartz. You can preorder a signed copy of Transcription when purchasing tickets, to be picked up when checking in at Pioneer Works. Just add onto your ticket in Eventbrite. Books will also be for sale at the event.
Ben Lerner is the acclaimed author of several books of poetry and prose. The recipient of fellowships from the Fulbright, Guggenheim, and MacArthur Foundations, Lerner has been a finalist for the National Book Award for Poetry and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, among many other honors. He serves as an advisor to Pioneer Works and Pioneer Works Broadcast, and is a Distinguished Professor of English at Brooklyn College.
Alexandra Schwartz is a staff writer at The New Yorker, where she co-hosts the Critics at Large podcast. In 2014, she was awarded the National Book Critics Circle's Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing.
This program is part of Pioneer Works Broadcast's Author Talks, a series highlighting authors and thinkers across disciplines.
Pioneer Works Broadcast is supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Program in Public Understanding of Science and Technology, bridging the two cultures of science and the arts.
Additional support for Author Talks at Pioneer Works is provided in part by Susie Lopez.

Science & Society: Do Forests Feel?
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: Join us for a consciousness-expanding conversation on the frontiers of forest ecology and plant intelligence with pathbreaking scientist Dr. Suzanne Simard and journalist Zoë Schlanger.
For decades, the idea that plants might communicate, learn, or even possess a form of consciousness was relegated to the scientific fringes. Today, a new generation of rigorous research seeks to bridge the gap between human experience and the life of plants. On the occasion of the publication of Simard’s new book, When the Forest Breathes: Renewal and Resilience in the Natural World, we gather to ask: What does it mean for a forest to "feel"?
Hosted by geographer, author, and Pioneer Works Director of Publishing Joshua Jelly-Schapiro, our guests will delve into the sophisticated social networks of "mother trees" and the "light eaters" that make up our planet’s lungs. They will explore how plant intelligence research returned from the wilderness, the intellectual debates that remain, and how a deeper understanding of forest consciousness and connectivity might help us survive in a changing climate.
Pre-signed copies of When the Forest Breathes are available as a pre-order with RSVP; books will also be for sale at the event, which will feature a book signing with Suzanne Simard. Please note that seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Come early to see a collection of tree cross sections and cores, and learn how to decode the historical data stored in tree rings with scientists from the Lamont-Doherty Tree Ring Lab at Columbia University. We will play Mort Garson’s seminal 1976 synth album Mother Earth’s Plantasia, which was specifically recorded for plants.
After the conversation, join us in the garden for stargazing with the Amateur Astronomers Association, weather permitting. For All Things Good will be serving up fresh Mexican food available for purchase throughout the evening.
Our signature series Science & Society grapples with our relationships to nature and each other. Each episode leads us deep into humanity’s timely and intersectional challenges, from biodiversity to plastics, public knowledge, the high seas, farming, climate, and love.

Supper Club with Calvin Eng
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: Pioneer Works Supper Club is a series of unique dining experiences that build community around food and celebrate local chefs as culinary artists.
This edition of Supper Club features the James Beard-nominated chef of Bonnie's, **Calvin Eng**, who combines American and Cantonese cuisine to renowned effect.
The evening accompanies the public exhibition in our second and third floor galleries,_[The Endless Garment: Atlantic Basin](https://pioneerworks.org/exhibitions/the-endless-garment-atlantic-basin)_. On view through April 12, the exhibition similarly celebrates the contributions of Asian garment workers—across Taiwan, Ho Chi Minh City, and New York’s Chinatown—whose labor and migration have shaped the fabric of New York.

Ende Tymes 16: Jeph Jerman, Pedestrian Deposit, Relay For Death, Las Sucias, Shot Dog
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: Pioneer Works is excited to present the closing night of the 16th Annual Ende Tymes Festival of Noise and Sonic Liberation, featuring performances by Jeph Jerman, Pedestrian Deposit, Relay For Death, Las Sucias, and Shot Dog.
The Ende Tymes Festival of Noise and Sonic Liberation was founded in 2011 in the wake of Fukushima, and returns for its 16th edition in today's frozen and fascist apocalypse. On the closing night of the festival, Ende Tymes is honored to present five lifer artists from the heights and depths of sonic exploration.
Jeph Jerman will bring textures from the human body and found objects discovered in the Arizona desert from his "Bio Electric" project—a volume that gather the five “body sounds” tapes released by Hands To in the late 1980s while Jeph was living in Colorado: Maesh, Decesh, Invesh, Aggresh, and Recesh. Pedestrian Deposit will harness the visceral body of the Pioneer Works space, in their first return to the building since their 2017 appearance. Relay For Death dives deep into the background noise pollution of urban life in an industrial meditation engulfed in a hypnotic nihilism. Las Sucias conjures brujería noise and Shot Dog will provide support. Learn more about the festival on its website.
Ende Tymes is organized by Bob Bellerue and Jackson Kovalchik.
About the artists
Jeph Jerman (b. 1959, Agana, Guam) started playing drums around age 16, eventually wasting time in various bar bands until giving that up to focus on re-inventing music. In Colorado during the '80's formed the bands: Cruel Posture, The Mudmen, Big Joey, City Of Worms and Blowhole, and began performing and recording under the name hands to. Moved to Seattle during the '90's and learned to improvise, beginning long associations with Dave Knott, Doug Theriault, Paul Hoskin, Lori Goldston and Wally Shoup among others. Formed the first animist orchestra and wrote music for it to perform. Moved to Arizona in the late '90's and started an investigation of the sonic properties of the desert, built crude sounding devices and generally tried to disappear.
Pedestrian Deposit is a longstanding sound and performance project formed in 2000. The collaborative effort of Shannon A. Kennedy and J. Borges is best described as visceral and intense; narrative and highly composed, often abstract sound textures informed by elements of experimental sound, shoegaze, harsh noise, musique concrete, neo-classical, dark ambient and performance art.Beginning with harsh noise compositions and early computer-based cut-up techniques, the project has evolved through multiple phases spanning electroacoustic minimalism, digital composition, amplified sculptural objects, and carefully structured dynamics that traverse the full range of sonic intensity. From 2008, Pedestrian Deposit has operated as a duo with Shannon Kennedy, whose contributions of extended cello technique, movement, and performance through physically-activated handmade instruments and amplified sculptures using strings, wood and metal, brought a critical shift in presence and sonic scope. Together, their live performances are known for being unrelenting and emotionally immersive; a dynamic and deliberate presence defined by precise, layered electroacoustic textures, high-pressure silence and explosive sonic chaos, pushing both composition and endurance to aesthetic limits.
Relay For Death is the experimental noise project of twin siblings Rachal and Roxann Spikula. Since 2005, the duo has created immersive, often bleak, sonic environments using field recordings, motors, radio transmissions, and handmade elements. They have released records on RRRecords, Hanson, No Rent, Helen Scarsdale, Total Black, Ballast, and a collaboration on Ecstatic Peace.
Las Sucias is an Avant-tropical noise duo formed by Danishta Rivero and Alexandra Buschman-Roman in Oakland, CA in 2014. Performances are rituals that draw from their Venezuelan and Puerto Rican roots.
Shot Dog is the collaborative project of New York City based artists Tyler Keen and Kiran Arora, who have both been active under various guises since the early 2010s. As a duo they have released recordings on the labels Idiopathic and Dead Gods. This will be their sole live performance.

Kali Malone's Does Spring Hide Its Joy featuring Lucy Railton & Stephen O’Malley
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date: -
Description: Pioneer Works, in collaboration with Bang on a Can, is excited to present Does Spring Hide Its Joy by composer Kali Malone. Does Spring Hide Its Joy is an immersive piece featuring Malone alongside musicians Stephen O'Malley on electric guitar, Lucy Railton on cello, and visuals by video artist Nika Milano. The music is a study in deep listening and non-linear durational composition with a heightened focus on septimal just intonation and beating interference patterns. The nuanced minimalism of cello, electric guitar, sine wives, and vast color fields unfolds an astonishing depth of focus and opens contemplative spaces in the listener's attention.
Since its creation in 2020 at the Berlin Funkhaus, Does Spring Hide Its Joy has been performed on many European stages including Schauspielhaus, Bozar, Haus Der Kunst, the Munch Museum, along with a two-day residency at the Southbank’s Purcell Room.
Pioneer Works shows are included as part of Bang on a Can's Long Play festival. With a festival pass, you can get access to both the Oneohtrix Point Never and Does Spring Hide Its Joy concerts at Pioneer Works and all four days of Long Play festival, which takes place in downtown Brooklyn between April 30–May 3, 2026. Get those festival passes here. You can see the full Long Play festival lineup here.

Oneohtrix Point Never program
Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: Pioneer Works, in collaboration with Bang on a Can, is excited to present two nights with Oneohtrix Point Never, to open this year’s Long Play festival. His only announced performances in the U.S. for this year, these New York shows are a rare opportunity to hear his widely celebrated album, Tranquilizer (2025). His set will be accompanied by multidisciplinary artist Freeka Tet’s singular live visual aesthetic.
The Brooklyn-based musician, composer, and producer is most known for his boundary-pushing soundscapes that blend art, sci-fi, avant-garde techniques, and nostalgic pop culture, often using vintage synthesizers, digital chaos, and complex sampling. His latest album, Tranquilizer, has garnered much critical acclaim—Pitchfork selected the album in "Best New Music" and describes Tranquilizer as “the most immediately pleasurable Oneohtrix Point Never album in some time.” Most recently, his score for Marty Supreme (2025) has been nominated for the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Score, and shortlisted for the Academy Awards shortlist for Best Original Score.

Venue: Pioneer Works
Date:
Description: Pioneer Works is proud to present the long-awaited return of instrumental rock trio the Dirty Three for a rare live performance at Pioneer Works and their first in New York City since 2009.
In June 2024, the band released Love Changes Everything, breaking a 12-year wait for new music from the Australian instrumental rock band. Now, the band reunites and sets sail across the ocean for their first North American tour since 2012. To the Main Hall they bring impassioned live performances that stir up a volcanic force each time: plunging into an explosive free fall in one moment, then morphing into a divine pool of emotions in an effortless flow. Like witnessing any supernatural phenomenon, it's an overwhelming experience that stays with you.

Description: For over two decades, Baltimore-based composer Dan Deacon has built a singular musical universe—one where ecstatic synth compositions, philosophical curiosity, and radical joy collide. Expanding the visionary world of albums like Mystic Familiar (2020), Deacon’s work channels both absurdity and profundity, transforming personal reflection into sweeping sonic landscapes. At the Pioneer Works Main Hall, these kaleidoscopic songs will become participatory spectacles: a room full of strangers moving together through waves of sound, guided by Deacon’s boundless energy and belief in music’s power to connect us.

The evening opens with performances by Macula Dog and MSHR. New York duo Macula Dog channels discordant electronic art-pop into immersive performances that merge sound, performance art, and surreal spectacle. Meanwhile, the Portland-based art collective MSHR constructs living audiovisual ecosystems from handmade electronic instruments, weaving light, circuitry, and human presence into hypnotic sculptural compositions.
Together, the artists trace a spectrum of experimental electronic practice—from cybernetic installations and art-pop performance to Deacon’s radiant, communal sound.
